What is a SLR Digital Camera

So in your quest to conjure up information on digital cameras, relating to which one you should invest in, you keep coming upon the term SLR Digital Camera. This of course leaves you scratching your head a bit and wondering what the heck is that right? That's natural and you'll be glad to hear that it's a very common question.

You see... SLR digital cameras aren't as popular amid your everyday point and shoot photographer. You see tons and tons of compact and ultra compact digital cameras nearly every time you step outside. These days' people have a cell phone in one pocket and a digital camera in the other constantly just in case. Only since around 2005 have the SLR cameras become more popularly known, and less of what they used to be thought of, which is the type of digital camera that professionals use.

Basically that sentence probably cleared up the question in your mind as to what they are and where you've seen SLR cameras, but you still don't really know the difference between that camera with the longer lens and the normal compact cameras you commonly see.

What is a SLR Digital Camera

First of all, the term SLR is an acronym that actually stands for Single Lens Reflex. For the most part, it's a camera that utilizes a viewfinder instead of the fancy LCD screens (although a lot of newer models of SLR's feature the LCD screen as well). These cameras have interchangeable lenses to give the photographer a much larger variety of shot choices and lens strengths.

With an SLR digital camera you frame the shot within your viewfinder and what you see is basically the exact shot that you're going to get. Therefore if your shot is blurry it's up to you to adjust that or else you're going to be getting a blurry shot. For the most part, the SLR cameras are less automatic and more manual - hence the fact that until recently only very avid photographers and professionals used them.

In essence this manual control makes for a much more versatile digital camera, giving the knowledgeable photographer much more control to create the photos that he or she wants or needs, and relies less...or not at all... on any of the cameras automatic functions whatsoever.

The price of an SLR digital camera is typically much higher than the compact digitals, and usually cost in the 00 to ,000 price range, and that's not ordinarily including important accessories like extra lenses, tripods, etc. However, since the SLR digital cameras are growing so quickly in popularity, as with anything, the prices are beginning to adjust and decrease. The parallel to this is to simply think back to when a DVD player was 0 dollars compared to the fact that you can buy one now for a quick bucks.

Now most importantly to the avid digital camera enthusiast or professional photographer is obviously the quality of the shot itself. The SLR cameras are of significant superior quality in nearly all cases... and can pack a punch of up to between 12 and 18 megapixels. However there are some insane SLR digital cameras that have amazing megapixel counts in the hundreds. This is obviously overkill for any sort of ordinary photography and honestly the highest megapixel cameras in the 500 megapixel range are for space photography and other special functions like that.

But the quality of the SLR camera is usually superior to the regular old compact digital cameras, and that's largely due to the large image sensors that they come equipped with.

So now that you know the answer to the question "what is an SLR digital camera" you can go out and decide if it's the right type of digital camera for you. Frankly, if you're serious about learning photography as an enthusiast then the SLR might be the camera for you.

Nikon D7000 Vs Nikon D90 - Should You Upgrade?

The Nikon D7000 was initially thought to be the upgrade replacement for the Nikon D90 but it seems that Nikon is still keeping the Nikon D90 in its line-up. If you have a Nikon D90, no doubt you would like to know if upgrading to the Nikon D7000 makes sense. While if you don't, it will be an interesting comparison between the two to see which is better.

Nikon D7000 vs Nikon D90 - Key Differences

Autofocus and Metering - Perhaps the biggest difference between the 2 models is the introduction of a new Metering and AF System in the Nikon D7000. Employing a 2016-pixel sensor over that of a 420-pixel sensor on the Nikon D90, there is no doubt that Nikon is focused on their objective of delivering a better final image with their cameras. With a better metering system to more accurately capture the colours, the Nikon D7000 also delivers greater flexibility with focusing with its 39-point AF system. With 9 cross-type sensors in the centre, you can depend on sharp focus quickly and effortlessly.

Nikon D7000 Vs Nikon D90 - Should You Upgrade?

Image Sensor - As usual, one of the first things that people look at is the megapixels count of the camera. Here, Nikon have increased the resolution to 16.2 megapixels for the D7000 but keeping in mind that they have always shied away from high resolutions flaunted by Canon, it is very reasonable in comparison to the 12.3 megapixels of the D90.

Noise Handling - Noise handling is also much better on the Nikon D7000 with the ISO range of the D7000 being expandable to ISO 25600. Sure it's not the same obscene ISO limit you see on the newer high end models but it's likely to satisfy most users. This is especially true when compared with the Nikon D90 which is 2 stops behind with an expanded limit of ISO 6400.

Shutter Speed / Burst Speed - The 6fps burst speed of the Nikon D7000 as compared to the 4.5fps of the Nikon D90 shows that Nikon is prepared to compete on this feature with the Canon XXD series. Canon EOS 60D can only manage 5.3fps so this makes the D7000 even more attractive. With this improvement helping to target sports shooters, it makes sense that the D7000 also delivers higher shutter speeds up to 1/8000s.

HD Movie Recording - While both models still only deliver 24fps shooting at the highest settings, the D7000 offers Full HD recording. Keeping in mind that the Nikon D90 was the first DSLR to offer movie recording, it is still not too shabby. The AF-F mode which allows auto focusing during recording may not be available on the D90 but most would find manual focusing to be the way forward if you want to be creative when shooting wide open.

Memory Slots - Dual Memory cards is definitely something which serious photographers value. Whether it is the overflow mode, backup mode or the Raw/JPEG mode, their availability can definitely help to improve your workflow. Nikon D90 was quite popular with a lot of photojournalists and these are very much the main group of users who will love the dual slot of the Nikon D7000.

Body Size & Quality - Perhaps the best thing about both the D90 and the D7000 is that they both offer a robust body while keeping the body relatively compact and lightweight. The D7000 is virtually the same size as the D90 and only about 70g heavier. This makes the D7000 perfect for those who are not upgrading from the D90 to the D300S (200g difference) because of weight concerns.

Nikon D3100 - On The List Of Top 10 Digital SLR Cameras

The Nikon D3100 digital SLR is one of the newer cameras on the market. Yet it is already one of the top 10 DSLRs in the online market.

The Top 10 Digital SLR Cameras list is a group of the top models, not by the number of sales, but by the user satisfaction ratings, or popularity. Each time a buyer logs in to one of the online stores and buys a camera, they can then go back and leave feedback about their purchase.

There is a 5 start rating that gets averaged to help potential buyers decide if the particular camera has the value and reliability they are looking for.

Nikon D3100 - On The List Of Top 10 Digital SLR Cameras

The list is compiled by searching the online store for highest rated cameras. In order to quality, the model must have at least 30 reviews. Then the list is compiled using the highest star-rating averages.

Why is this list of interest to you?

Photographers are in love with their digital cameras. If you are one of those who needs the next best camera, you will, of course, be doing research to find out the if the camera you think will be your best bet is actually highly regarded by others.

In this case, the Nikon D3100 is on the list and it may be just the right camera for you.

If your interest is in upgrading from a point and shoot camera or from an older Nikon entry level model, the D3100 is in the correct category for your consideration.

It is an upgrade from the D3000, The Nikon developers have been keenly listening to demands from photographers about needed changes. The newest features that have been upgraded or added since the D3000 are significant.

First of all, you can now record video. And that is not just video, it is quality HD video with full time auto-focus and stereo sound. It was not available in the previous model.

There is also now one touch Live View. This is the best thing since baked bread to some folks. No doubt, it is convenient.

Other added or enhanced features include a larger, more brilliant LCD screen for better playback or live composition.

Image quality has always been a strong benefit of this line of cameras, so there is nothing to worry about there. But since this is one of the newest models, it is quite interesting that it has already received enough votes to put it on the list.

The Best Small Digital Camera For the Money

For some time now I've been looking for the best small digital camera. I wanted a point and shoot, to carry around when I don't have the Nikon D80 with me. I wanted something small, with image stabilization, optical zoom, plus very good shutter speed.

In the end, after all the research I've done I decided to go either with the Canon SD 870, 850 IS or the G9. They all take very good photos, crispy and light, with a good IS. You can even zoom in and the images will still be sharp. If you take those photos at ISO 400, they will end up with less noise or the same noise as a D80.

The cameras I just mentioned are small and quite good. The Canon 870IS is a small camera, which can fit easily in the pocket. The 850 was a present I made to some relatives of mine during the holidays and they are extremely satisfied with the photos it takes. As for G9, it's a camera that can shoot videos as well, and it's one of my favorites so far.

The Best Small Digital Camera For the Money

The prices of the cameras I mentioned so far:

Canon Powershot G9: 0, with an optical zoom of 6x and 12.1 megapixels

Canon Powershot SD870IS, that has 8 megapixels, a 3.8x optical zoom, at a price of 4

Canon Powershot SD950IS, priced at 0, with a 12.1 megapixel resolution and 3.7 optical zoom

Canon Powershot SD 850 IS, at 0, with 4x zoom and 8 megapixels

Another digital camera that was suggested to me was the Olympus SP-570UZ. After looking around for a bit, I think it's a camera that can be carried easily when you want to take a photo without carrying a DSLR with you. The camera has a good sensor, very good zoom, image stabilization and a large aperture. The price is also OK, at a price around 0 - 500. This version is the third that was launched in this series.

The storage of the Olympus SP-570UZ can be done on xD cards, which you need to buy separately. The camera also ships with editing software, which is called Olympus Master 2. I especially like the 20x optical dual image zoom. The 10 megapixel resolution makes sure that you can print photos at a 18 x 24 inch size.

Some of the technologies that come with the camera are dual image stabilization, face detection, perfect shot preview and shadow adjustment technology.

The Best All Around Digital Camera

Why is so difficult for camera companies to come up with one good all around digital camera that's perfect for all occasions? I suppose it's not really in their best interests to encourage consumers to only own one perfect camera, when they can sell them several. If I were more of a conspiracy theory advocate, I'd suggest they do it on purpose. But, I'm not, and I do believe there are other factors at work here. With all that being said, it doesn't mean we can at least try to find the most likely candidate for best all around digital camera.

The three most distinguishable features or dividing factors when it comes to digital cameras are size, ease of use, and image quality. To lesser and greater degrees, these traits seem to be mutually exclusive when it comes to camera design and build.

Smaller sized camera designs are very portable, but usually affect ease of use and image quality in negative ways. The smaller a camera is, the smaller the controls are, which makes them harder to use. Single control buttons and wheels are often used for multiple functions which can increase user confusion. Smaller cameras often mean, that features like viewfinders get left off in the effort to add bigger LCD screens. Smaller often means zoom lenses are less powerful, and overall lens quality suffers. The most successful small sized cameras I like are the Canon SD1000 Digital Elph, and the Olympus Stylus 790SW.

The Best All Around Digital Camera

Ease of use usually means lots of auto settings, which is great for newbie photographers, as little skill is required to snap a picture. But, it also means camera designers are forced to compromise on default settings that are OK for most pictures, but not great for all pictures. Factory set defaults will have to do until cameras become smart enough to detect all the nuances of a particular shot regarding lighting, color, and artistic intention. The Canon Powershot A570IS is one of the better cameras in terms of simplifying things at a reasonable price.

The ultimate in image quality usually means big bulky SLR cameras with a case load of lenses and controlled lighting for different types of shooting environments. SLR photography also involves micro managing of all the various camera settings such as aperture, ISO settings, white balance, f-stop and so on. You really have to know what your doing. The Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR, or the Nikon D40 are good cameras in this category that don't break the bank.

To build one camera that can do everything would be ideal, but were not there yet. I believe we will be at some point, but a number of technologies still need to make some considerable advances before that can happen. Lens technology and camera intelligence being the two main ones. Until then, the best all around digital camera will just have to be the one your holding right now. Like the song says, "Love the one your with".
